This update focuses on Morocco hunting tourism. Morocco officially opened the 2026-2027 hunting season on Friday 2 October 2026 in Marrakech, placing hunting tourism at the heart of its strategy to promote sustainable development and rural territories.

Morocco hunting tourism: what to know

The launch was organised by the National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) in cooperation with the Royal Moroccan Hunting Federation, during a thematic day titled: “Hunting tourism in Morocco: natural wealth and sustainable development”.

The event brought together public officials, professionals, associations and specialised companies to clarify the framework for Morocco hunting tourism and to recall the rules governing the activity.

The ceremony was chaired by Abdelrahim Houmy, Director General of ANEF, and Ahmed Moussaoui, President of the Federation, underlining the need for coordination between public policy and sector stakeholders.

Hunting under the “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030” strategy

According to figures presented in Marrakech, the previous hunting season attracted more than 65,000 Moroccan hunters and nearly 5,000 visiting hunting tourists.

Since the launch of the “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030” national strategy, the number of leased hunting lots has risen from 1,278 in the 2020-2021 season to 1,737 in 2025-2026. During the same period, the leased surface area increased from around 3.35 million to almost 4.39 million hectares.

These figures show the growing importance of hunting in the management of natural areas and in some local economies, while raising the issue of how to balance tourism attractiveness with wildlife protection.

What it means for Moroccans living abroad

For Moroccans living abroad who regularly travel back home, hunting can be:

  • a regulated outdoor activity to include in a family or friends’ stay,
  • a possible area for investment or partnerships with local service providers,
  • a sign of how rural territories connected to family roots are changing.

Around 146 specialised companies are now involved in the dynamics of Morocco hunting tourism, offering accommodation, guiding, transport, catering and tailor-made stays around hunting areas.

For members of the diaspora interested in rural projects (guesthouses, ecotourism, or valorisation of family land), the expansion of this sector is a signal to watch, even if every initiative must strictly comply with regulations and environmental standards.

Sustainability, training and the fight against poaching

Authorities insist on the environmental dimension of the new season. ANEF highlights sustainable management of wildlife resources and biodiversity conservation as key priorities.

According to the data presented, stronger partnerships are being developed to:

  • train hunters in good practices,
  • combat poaching,
  • protect natural habitats,
  • diversify hunting offers, including the development of bow hunting.

Diversification aims to broaden the hunting and tourism offer, while showcasing the country’s natural assets.

Check the rules before planning a hunting trip

For Moroccans abroad who wish to hunt during a stay in Morocco, it is essential to check in advance the required permits, open seasons, authorised areas and insurance conditions.

Official information is regularly updated by the competent authorities. In addition, the institutional reference portal and Canal212’s own guide to practical procedures for Moroccans living abroad can help prepare a trip or a return project that takes this type of activity into account.

The development of this case more broadly reflects the transformation of rural spaces and how nature is used, a key issue for many Moroccans abroad who keep strong ties with their regions of origin.
