This update focuses on Tawfik Bentayeb Anderlecht. After opening his goal account with Anderlecht, Tawfik Bentayeb is heading into a major first European test against Lyon, determined to confirm the scoring instinct he built between Morocco and France.
Tawfik Bentayeb Anderlecht: a strong start in Belgium
Signed this summer from Troyes, Tawfik Bentayeb has settled quickly at Anderlecht. Last weekend, the Moroccan striker scored his first goal for the Brussels side.
His finish gave Anderlecht a crucial win over Mechelen, a decisive goal coming just before his expected debut in European competition with RSCA.
For Moroccans living in Europe, especially in Belgium and France, Bentayeb’s path is increasingly familiar: training at home, a stepping stone in Ligue 2, then exposure on the continental stage.
A striker obsessed with efficiency
In an interview with a Belgian daily, Bentayeb described his demanding relationship with scoring. He admits he struggles to sleep after a match without a goal and is constantly chasing more efficiency in the box.
This mindset dates back to his early days. Trained at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, he recalls often scoring the vast majority of his team’s goals during his youth in Morocco.
Before Anderlecht, the 24-year-old built a strong reputation in France. With Troyes, he finished last season as Ligue 2’s top scorer with 20 goals, a tally that drew interest from several clubs looking for a reliable finisher.
Anderlecht eventually won the race, investing €4.5 million including bonuses to secure his transfer. The club is counting on him not only in the league but also to help the team raise its ambitions in Europe.
From Union Touarga to Europe, a path closely watched by Moroccans
Before France and Belgium, Tawfik Bentayeb played for Union Touarga, then Rodez. His journey through the Mohammed VI Academy and the Moroccan league is closely followed by many young players back home.
For Moroccans abroad, his rise offers several clear takeaways:
- it underlines the Mohammed VI Academy’s role as a bridge to European football;
- it shows Ligue 2 can be a strategic step before a bigger league;
- it strengthens the image of Moroccan football among European clubs.
This growing profile also matters symbolically for Moroccan supporters based in Europe, who are seeing new national talents emerge in the leagues where they live.
A first European test against Lyon
Anderlecht’s upcoming European clash with Lyon will be an important benchmark for Tawfik Bentayeb. The Moroccan forward will be judged on his ability to reproduce, at continental level, the finishing qualities that marked his time in Ligue 2.
For Moroccan fans in France, Belgium and across Europe, this fixture is a chance to watch another representative of Moroccan football on the big stage. Bentayeb’s performances with Anderlecht could, in the medium term, influence his place in the hierarchy of Moroccan forwards in the national team.
For now, the striker remains focused on one target: scoring, regularly and decisively, to establish himself as one of Anderlecht’s main offensive weapons.
