This update focuses on Morocco heatwave alert. Morocco is facing a new heatwave with temperatures expected to reach 46°C, while thunderstorms are forecast in several regions from Friday to Monday, according to the national weather service.

Morocco heatwave alert in southern provinces

The General Directorate of Meteorology has issued an orange-level alert covering a wide area of the country for the coming days.

From Friday to Monday, temperatures should range between 43°C and 46°C in the provinces of Oued Ed-Dahab, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Tata, Aousserd and Boujdour.

Such extreme heat requires extra caution, especially for older people, children and anyone working outdoors during the day.

Up to 42°C in many central and coastal areas

The same Morocco heatwave alert, with temperatures between 38°C and 42°C, is expected from Friday to Sunday across a long stretch of central, Atlantic and inland regions.

The provinces concerned are Taroudant, Guelmim, Khouribga, Settat, Chichaoua, Sidi Bennour, Essaouira, Safi, Fez, Khemisset, Taounate, Youssoufia, Beni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, Meknes, El Kelaâ des Sraghna, Sidi Kacem, Marrakech, Rehamna, Khénifra, Sidi Slimane and Moulay Yacoub.

In these areas, the most intense heat is expected around midday and late afternoon, with nights that may remain uncomfortably warm.

Thunderstorms, hail and strong gusts on Friday

Alongside the heatwave, the weather service is forecasting thunderstorms with hail and strong wind gusts, with rainfall totals estimated between 15 and 25 mm.

These storms are expected on Friday between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. in the provinces of Khénifra, Al Haouz, Azilal, Ifrane and Midelt.

They may cause sudden run-off, falling rocks in mountain areas and sharp drops in visibility on certain roads.

What it means for your trips to Morocco

For Moroccans living abroad planning to travel home in the coming days, these weather conditions deserve close attention, especially if your itinerary goes through the affected provinces.

  • Avoid long journeys during peak heat hours, particularly with children or vulnerable relatives.
  • Carry enough water and plan frequent breaks when driving across hot regions.
  • Check local forecasts before any excursion into mountains or rural areas.
  • Expect possible delays or more difficult driving conditions on secondary roads during heavy storms.

In cities where 38–42°C temperatures are expected, it is safer to schedule administrative errands, family visits and shopping early in the morning or later in the evening.

Follow official updates during the Morocco heatwave alert

As conditions can change quickly, travellers and residents are encouraged to follow updates from the General Directorate of Meteorology and official information channels before and during their stay.

Authorities usually recommend a few basic precautions during a this case: drink water regularly, use sun protection, air out homes during cooler hours and limit physical effort in direct sunlight.

If the situation worsens locally or new advisories are issued, further information should be released by the competent services. Until the end of this episode, expected early next week, Moroccans and visitors alike are advised to remain vigilant.
